Just a Few Thoughts to Start the Week

January 10, 2010

As I worked on my weekly newsletter, a couple of things kept rumbling through my mind. One was a poem (courtesy of Muthering Heights):

"I'd rather be a mother than anyone on earth
Bringing up a child or two of unpretentious birth...
I'd rather tuck a little child all safe and sound in bed
than twine a chain of diamonds about my [carefree] head.
I'd rather wash a smudgy face with round, bright, baby eyes
Than paint the pageantry of fame or walk among the wise."

~Meredith Gray

I've written before that ours is the noblest profession -- mothering.
I'd rather, just as the poem says.
Even when it's hard and I'm tired and sleep-deprived and I've lost it again, I'd rather.

Why? Nothing good comes easily.

And more than that, we have grace available for the taking.

Consider Kathleen Norris's words from Acedia and Me:

"For grace to be grace, it must give us things we didn’t know we needed and take us to places where we didn’t want to go. As we stumble through the crazily altered landscape of our lives, we find that God is enjoying our attention as never before."

As mothers, we're often taken to places we don't want to go and daily we stumble through the crazily altered landscape of our lives...but we learn to rely on grace.

And that's a wonderful thing.

Mothering is difficult but what priceless awards too.

And how much harder would it be without help?

I'm thankful for grace -- and for each other!

I have always thought my children were a gift from God and my part was to give them back to Him.And I did but certainly I could not have done that without His help and certainly His grace. Good post.

Rely on grace. Amen! But what wonderful rewards, joy and GRANDCHILDREN come too! :)

I wish I never complained about my job as a mother... but it offers so many challenges and so many blessings... I guess to focus on the positive is the challenge in life!
