Three Words to Start the Week

Monday February 1, 2010

I've been thinking about the upcoming week, and three words keep popping up in my mind. Here they are.

1. Valentine! – It’s Valentine Month, and when I flip the calendar I see hearts and flowers. You can’t escape it. And the kids? They’re eying all the valentines on the shelf, checking out the candy…

Valentine’s Day is all about love, so why not use that with your kids? Make this month really about love. Use the two weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day to show love in a new way.

Give each child a day and tell them, “When it’s your turn, look for one thing you can do for your brother (or sister) that will show you love them. Just one thing.” Doing a chore for a brother?Helping a sister with homework? Letting them choose first? Help your kids show love in a tangible way.

Now it’s your turn. Who can you show love to? Maybe there’s someone in the neighborhood who needs a smile, a hand with groceries, a batch of cookies? It’s good practice for you, and little eyes are watching – so model love for them.

2. Football – Well, there’s gonna be a lot of talk about it this week. I’m not a huge fan, but I can deal with that. I don’t really know a lot about the game. (Personally, I think basketball is a lot more exciting!) When my boys play football, here’s how I watch. My boy is #45. So, I watch 45. 45 goes down, the boys pile up. I watch for 45 to emerge from the pile and walk away on his own. I also watch the scoreboard. And I know to cheer when 45 carries the ball.

And this week? (I know the Super Bowl isn't until Sunday, but there's hype all week...) Well, I have strong ties to Indiana and love those Manning boys, so for me, it’s Colts all the way!

3. Rejoice – I’m going to be thinking and writing about rejoicing this week. When we look around and see suffering all around – both next door and far away on a little island – it’s sometimes hard not to let your spirit settle at your feet. I’m going back to G.K. Chesterton’s quote from Friday, and I’ll be adding some thoughts and scripture to go along with that.

Hope you all have a great week. I’ve added a Followers spot over there on your right, so if you’d like to join in, go right ahead. Leave me a comment and share your ideas for helping your kids show love this month. You can even tell me who you're rooting for in the Super Bowl!

Happy February!

Hi Laura - I'm so happy you stopped by my blog! I'm an outnumbered mom, too, only mine are older (18, 20, 21). Here's my thought on football - FOOD!!! Can't wait for half-time snacks! Have a great week ~ ♥
