Rest, A Son's Voice, and Worth: Friday's Fave Five

Friday April 2, 2010
Welcome to Friday’s Fave Five. It’s all about looking back at the week’s blessings. If you’re a blogger who would like to join us and link up on your blog, see Susanne at Living to Tell the Story.

My five faves for this week?

1. Rest in spring. Oh, the beautiful weather! We all enjoy it, but only if we take the time. I have time in spades right now, and I’m relishing it. Here’s a quote from J. Lubbuck that sums it up for me.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer (spring) day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky is by no means a waste of time.

2. A day to sleep late. That would have been yesterday, and it was heavenly. I didn’t even set the alarm. How long has it been since I did that? It was great.

3. A call from Germany. My son is on a choir trip to Austria and Germany and I got a call from him Wednesday night. It was just great to hear his voice! He’s having a great time and I’m glad he could go, but I’ll be glad to get him back in the nest.

4. A C.S. Lewis quote. “There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.” Lewis was, of course, talking about heaven, encouraging us to set our sights and hearts toward the Creator. And because of the empty tomb, we have much better things ahead than any we leave behind. As we learn to lean on Him more each day, His grace makes even the earthly days ahead easier to bear. Because He lives, I can view this quote in heavenly and earthly terms – there are better things ahead.

5. A mom’s worth. Mom, what we do is important. We take little souls and nurture them, teach them, discipline them, and we get so much in return. What we do lasts a lifetime and beyond. I ran across a quote by G.K. Chesterton this week that underscores the importance of the foundation we work to lay each day:

Happy is he who still loves something he loved in the nursery: He has not been broken in two by time; he is not two men, but one, and he has saved not only his soul but his life.

Those early lessons – the memories from the nursery – will serve our children well into their adulthood.

What are your favorites from this week? Leave a comment and share your blessings.

Happy weekend -- Happy Easter.

My favorite was yesterday... a homeless man and his dog camp out in the grass by our grocery store. We see him every week and just drive by. Yesterday my youngest and I bought him a sandwich and dog treats. We gave them to him. As we drove away, my daughter's face was priceless. Her eyes were wide and she was smiling. I asked her if she was happy and she said yes. I asked her if helping that man made her feel good and she said yes. I asked her if God was proud of her and she SMILED and said yes. I will always remember that.

What a blessing to rest! I had sinus surgery yesterday, so I’m on day 2 of rest, and I love it. Glad you got to hear from your son. Praying for his safe return.

What a wonderful quote in your #4! And your thoughts on it make it a very powerful Fave Five.

He is risen indeed!

As I read the C.S. Lewis quote you posted, I thought again how his understatement highlights how often we forget what REALLY is ahead. I have a feeling we'll be looking back someday and shake our heads at our small imaginations.

How nice to have a day to sleep in and be able to do so! Its hard for me to sleep in, even when I can. A treat for me is going to bed early :)

I'm sure you were comforted by your sons call from Germany. How wonderful.

I was really touched by your blog, particularly the last part where you were quoting G. K. Chesterton and encouraging us as mothers. I sincerely felt encouraged. :) How fun for your son to be in Germany. I lived there for 4 years. We are currently visiting a town called Leavenworth in Washington state. It is like a little German village. The closest we will get to Germany I think!

My favorite this week? A new piece of photo-artwork (and some famous meatballs) from that Swedish furniture store. :~D

I love days I don't have to set the alarm clock. And rest without the guilt that I need to be up and doing something is heavenly.

It is so good to hear our kids' voices, especially in situations like that.

Amen to #4 and 5.

Glad you are having the opportunity to just rest. That comes so seldom when your kids are still home. Enjoy it.

I appreciated all your quotes - esp. the CS Lewis one. Thanks for sharing.

Hearing your son's voice when he's so far away is always a wonderful blessing. My youngest is in Dominican Republic just now and we were excited to find a facebook message from him last night....he's been on a 'survival' trip into the mountains/jungle and just returned to civilization. We likely won't hear his voice, though - until he comes home in 2 more weeks. :(

Have a wonderful Reserrection Day tomorrow!
