A Defining Moment

Monday September 20, 2010

My first boy was two weeks old, and we found ourselves in the pediatrician office for yet another weight check.

We were faced with a tough choice. No, it wasn’t a life-or-death decision, but it was huge for me and, because it was so important to me, it loomed large for my husband, too.

The doctor’s news was disappointing, and his suggestion wasn’t what I wanted to hear.

My husband’s response was stellar. It was a real defining moment for his dadhood and, actually, for our relationship.

My dear husband looked deep into my eyes and said, “Honey, I know this seems like everything right now. But when you consider the spectrum of our life with this boy – eighteen years or more – this is just a microcosm of our time with him.”

Wise words from Dad put everything in perspective for me. I’ll never forget it.

What about you?

Has the Dad in your household had one of those defining moments that helped put things in perspective?

What a sweet husband... of course I'm drawing blanks right now, but I know its not because mine hasn't had those brilliantly defining moments. :)

Oh, definitely -- though of course I can't remember specific ones right now. I'm more intense, he's more laid-back, and that has caused conflict some times when it seems he isn't taking something as seriously as I thought was needed. But on the other hand he has helped me many times put things in perspective and relax.

I love that you remember this defining moment in your relationship with your husband. I too am lucky to be married to a man who is as wonderful a father as he is a partner. Thanks for the reminder of that today.

Awww, he's a good one, Laura. Yes, I'm sure my hubbie has....Let me think....Oh, I know he has....

LOL....of course, thanks for reminding me to think about that.

Great thing to think about!
My husband is great at reminding me to go ahead and encourage my boys to revel in boy stuff--to get filthy, stinky, loud, and rambunctious. (As long as they're outside when they do it!) Sometimes I need that reminder!

I'm having trouble coming up with a particular way my husband has done this. Of course that's not to say he doesn't, only that I can't think of an example!
What a lovely memory of your husband though! I really think that's one of the reasons why God intended us to do this child-rearing thing in pairs, instead of alone.
