I Wish I Had ...

Monday October 25, 2010

Have you ever said, “I wish I had…”?

I’m guessing most of us have.

It may not be too late! What you wish you’d done the first time, you can try the second time … or the third … or the fourth.

And if it’s too late to implement some mom strategy, maybe your words can help another mom along.

What do I wish I had done differently? Two things – and they both revolve around the family dinner table.

We guarded dinner together jealously, and we usually succeeded in having some great family times. But I wish I had introduced my boys to fancy family dinners once in a while.

When I was a kid, my mom used the china and crystal every Sunday. I wish I’d had the nerve to try that with my boys! We made Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter special, but I would have enjoyed doing that on a more regular basis.

And the other? I wish I had let them cook – taught them, encouraged them to cook. I often talked jokingly about assigning a day to Dad and the boys, and I wish I had. It would have given me a break and would have been great practice for them, too.

What about you? What do you wish you had done differently – or plan to do differently in the future?

I think my wish is your first one - that we used the fancy dinner ware more often. One thing I have learn that it is powerful to write your wishes out. Putting them in writing somehow brings them closer to happening.

I wish we/I had guarded our family dinner time... we're trying to go back to that, but now that they're all teenagers on different schedules, it's much harder--and even more important, I feel. We're doing better but there's still work to be done

I'm praying one of my kids will have the talent to cook since I still don't. I'll be happy to bake. :O)

My daughter will soon surpass me in the kitchen- she loves to cook and to bake and for the most part I'm happy to oblige.
There are many things I wish I'd done differently, the good news is I still have plenty of time! ;)

I cannot believe you are writing about this because I was just thinking yesterday, after church, that I 'wish i had" done a couple of things differently. The first was: when I asked my 11 year old to set the table with the good china she had no idea what I was talking about. It had been THAT long....this will now change and whenever I cook a large sunday dinner, plus one time during the week, we are going to use the "good stuff"...and...I was telling my 17 year old I was wishing I had allowed her to do more baking when she wanted to as an elementary child...now she has lost interest and yet i now want her to :(
I'm hoping to improve this during the xmas season!

I don't know! I feel like I am just making it one day at a time. =)

Ya know - I'm trying not to live by regret. I wish I hadn't had to go back to work, but I did. I wish I hadn't had to leave them in daycare, but I did. I wish we could take a family vacation every year, but we haven't been. I wish they were already learning to play an instrument...but there's still time for that.

But we do eat dinner together as a family most nights, we do let them cook with us, even the three year old, and we do practice good manners (most of the time) and celebrate with a one-night-a-week "Bad Manners Night" as a reward - and they LOVE it.

I roll in guilt over so many things, so many ways that I fail my children (today's blog, in fact, covers this topic). But, I'm happy with the general direction that we are going and I celebrate the lives we've been entrusted with. May I be worthy, every day, to be their mom!

Oh, my goodness, Laura, where do I start? More household chores would be one.
