The Road to Rest

Monday October 8, 2012

Sure, I need rest.

But how do I get there?

That’s the million dollar question.

The problem is, it takes discipline. And most of us aren’t too interested in the “D word.” But the only way to avoid too much food is to push back from the table. Too much television? Get up and turn it off. Too much Facebook? Click it off and walk away.

Those things take discipline. Not the punishing kind, but the instructional, educational kind that leads to a change in behavior.

The good thing about all of this is, there’s help! Even more than you can ask or imagine. Take a look at this:

“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age.” (Titus 2:11,12)

There’s help in grace. It teaches us to say “No” and to live self-controlled lives! And how do we get this grace? We simply ask. And trust.

When I need something desperately, I go to someone I know really well …someone I can count on.

So it is with grace. I spend some time with God, read His word, pray, listen, learn of Him. I see grace in Him. Then I recognize His gift of grace in my every day.

And finding rest is…easier.
For my rest is in Him.

I'm linking up with Laura, Jen, and Michelle today.

Laura, have you been reading my mind? I've recently come to that difficult realization in my life that I need more discipline. So these are good words for me today. :) I guess.
