Summer Musings: Friday's Fave Five

Friday June 3, 2011

Can you name five blessings from your week? Susanne from Living to Tell the Story hosts Friday’s Fave Five each week. Click on over and see her if you’d like to join in!

Here are my favorites for this week:

1. A brand new babe.
One of my close buddies is a real friend of the heart. She was the subject of my “Handful of Blueberries, Heart Full of Love” post. (She and her hubby fostered three boys for almost a year, going from no children to three boys overnight.) They are now the proud parents of a sweet little boy of their own. I am so very excited for them!

2. Being a mother of a graduate and the fellowship that comes with it. It's always neat when you can say, "I know how that is" and encourage another mom along the way. I know several of you out there are mothers of graduates this year – and I know many have been there already. There’s a special post for the Mother of the Graduate right here. Yes, it is a bittersweet time, but try to concentrate on the sweet.

3. Learning. No surprise for a teacher, huh? But I’ve decided to take some classes this summer, so I’ll be on the other side of the desk, so to speak. I’m really looking forward to it. I figure it will help my teaching and my writing, both.

4. No real schedule…except for the one I come up with. This is really nice. I do have things to get done – a book to finish editing, books to read (for fun), books to read (for class), writing. And I managed to get five things submitted this week. If you haven’t read about my Road to 100 Rejections, you can catch it here. I’m on the way! But I do love this setting my own schedule, for this part of the year, anyway.

5. A quote:

“Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry.”
(W.B. Yeats)

I’m a big fan of poetry; I even try my hand at it from time to time. The quarrel with ourselves can be so interesting, so enlightening. The questions, the doubts, the “what if’s.” Exploring those takes us down new paths. One reason I love summer so is because I have more time to wander down the trail.

Happy summer wandering to you,
