A Few Words to Start the Week

January 18, 2010
How are you starting this week off?

I have three words in my mind (three very different words) as I look forward to another seven days.

1. Gratitude – When I look at the news, I can’t help but be thankful. Thankful for my family, for a stable country, for the hearts of compassion that are reaching out, for the rescue workers and medical personnel that are working tirelessly in Haiti. Gratitude moves me to compassion, as I hurt for those who are not as blessed as we are.

2. Downhill – As a teacher, I look at the years pretty much in halves. Once we finish first semester, it’s downhill all the way! We’re halfway through the school year!

That may make some moms cringe, but no matter what my kids’ age, I’ve always loved the summertime. No more schedules! No homework to help with! You can let the laundry go just a bit – who’s gonna notice? No socks! No lunches to pack. Routine can be a great thing, but the no-routine of summer can be even better. And we’re halfway there!

3. Getaway – Yes, my hubby and I are getting away for just a short time. (My mom said, “Do you even know HOW to go off somewhere by yourselves?) We’ll only be gone one night, but we’re looking forward to it.

We parents often put so much time into the things we value – except for our marriage relationship. We expect it just to take care of itself because, after all, we love each other, right? I’ve been reminding myself lately that our commitment to one another will speak volumes to our sons.

Do you have three words for this week? Leave me a comment, and give me a peek into your weekly vocabulary.

My WORDS TO START THE WEEK

JOY- Just an inner feeling of "all is right with my world today" Of course it doesn't always last, but it is good when it i there.

ANTICIPATION-So much to do and so many things to look forward to this week. Of course one of them will be the KINDRED HEARTS gathering on Friday.

HEARTACHE- Even in my joy and anticipation I can't help but feel heartache for the people of Haiti and all the mission workers who have seen their work destroyed.

Good article.

Endurance - I hear the Haitian people are a people of joy and perseverance. EVen in the light of such tragedy I heard a reporter say he hears singing.

Priority - I want to focus this week on the important not the urgent

Quest - a word the Lord laid on my heart this past weekend. Not sure where this will take me but it is full of adventure and positive movement

Focus -- I can't do it all, so I need to focus on what's important and authentic.

Explore -- the mythical realms created by Tolkien, the dormant interests of my heart, the characters of my abandoned novel

Journey -- along the path God has set my feet upon this year.

I love this idea of starting each week with words as a sort of intention.

Mine would have to be:

Focus - on what matters most, on the present

Action - too often I spend too much time reflecting - I want to take action to aid the people of Haiti

Connect - to my sons, to my Husband (have a wonderful getaway with yours, by the way!), to myself

This was exactly what I needed to read today - thank you! (and thank you for stopping by today!)

My words would have to be Patience (for being with sick kids this week...) Commitment (to my upcoming writing class) and Optimism (for the future... I always have to remind myself to be optimistic about a few things in the future!)

The only reason I cringe at HALFWAy is my daughter is in Kindergarten & I LOVE having her home 1/2 days with me! I will miss her when she starts full time (too much)!
