Blessings of the Week: Friday's Fave Five

June 11, 2010
Happy Friday! Thanks for joining me for Friday’s Fave Five. If you’d like to join in, visit Susanne at Living to Tell the Story for the details.

Time to share my blessings for this week.

1. Considerate people. My eighty-four-year-old mom flew home on Tuesday, and it seems like for this whole trip, the Lord just put the right people in her path. She had nothing but praise for everyone from the people who sat next to her to those who helped her to and from the plane. This was an adventure for her, and that made it a good one.

2. Safe travel. Everyone who was here for Graduation made it home safely, and I’m thankful for that. Some of them drove straight through from Florida to Kentucky (oh, the folly of youth), and even their trip was blessedly uneventful.

3. Moms of all kinds. I’ve been struck this week by diversity and unity – how the canopy of moms that love and shield and nurture our kids differs so, yet remains so much the same. I have a post planned on just that subject for this weekend. We moms differ – occupationally, generationally – but we share so much, and we need each other.

4. Time to be creative. School is out! I have a Farewell Brunch to attend Friday and I do need to go straighten up my room a bit, but all the official stuff is done, and I’m already feeling the creative juices flowing. I would not have said my mind is preoccupied with school, but it’s amazing how many ideas have surfaced in just the last 24 hours, as school obligations have diminished. Creativity definitely thrives on time…time to think.

5. An interesting quote. I’m reading the most fascinating book about postmodernism and faith, and the author makes the observation that too many Christians settle for easy “Because I said so” answers, thinking that they fulfill Christ’s admonition, “Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:4). Then she writes:

“It seems to me, however, that a true sign of childlike humility is the recognition that one does not have everything figured out and hence must keep on asking questions.”

We like to pretend (to others, and often to ourselves) that we have it all figured out! But true humility says, “I don’t have it figured out. Here’s another question for you.” I love that.

Here’s hoping you had a great week, too!

Just when I think that I have everything figured out--I'm a perfectionist and a control freak--I realize that I really don't know much of any thing.

Except that God loves me and gives me grace, mercy, peace, and strength.

Maybe that's all that I need to know.

Congratulations on your son's graduation!

Sweet dreams.

Thankful your mind had such a guided trip home. The Lord is so gracious. Yes, we moms do need each other, even in our diversity. I’ll look forward to your post. “Creativity definitely thrives on time” – so true! I think that’s why I haven’t scrapbooked in quite awhile.

Love the quote; we definitely need to ask questions and always be learning more.

I want to be learning and asking questions up to the day I go Home to Glory ...

"Creativity definitely thrives on time" - so true, and that is why I think I get so frustrated when my schedule does not allow any extra time. A wellspring of activity is dammed up inside!

Great list, especially about your mom. I do like the quote at the end - I have caught myself too often in the "because I said so" mode of operation as a mom and as a Christian. good reminder. What is the name of the book you are reading?

Yeah, for you. Vacation and what fun with family. Thanks for reminding me to be thankful.

I have to agree with on creativity. We need stress free time in order to really be creative.

Love that last quote!

I am glad the Lord brought great people across your mom's path while she was traveling and that all the traveler's got home safely.

I agree with you about creativity thriving on tine to think. I think the freed-up schedule is a plus, but also putting to bed other responsibilities so there's more brain space for other thoughts. :-)

That last quote is excellent -- very true! Who is the author?

Thankful your Mom had such a good time during her trip!

I love the quote you shared! I am going to try to tuck that one away in my noggin. :)

Thanks for sharing!

I think that quote is great also. If no one asked question we may all stop learning about Christ and that would be awful. I'm glad that your graduation went well and that every one made it home safe.

What a wonderful fave five! Considerate people seems to be in less numbers, and I'm glad your mom made it safe to you.

We Moms definitely do need each other. The support and encouragement from others who have been there or are in the trenches right now is invaluable.

So glad your Mom's trip was smooth and so many were there to give her a hand.

A great list you've got going here, Laura. And I love that quote at the end -- I am a questioner, so that approach makes sense to me!
