Letting Go, Holding On

Thursday August 4, 2011

“All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.” (Havelock Ellis)

Letting go.
Holding on.

So much of life is comprised of these two things. It’s a delicate balance, this art of living—how we mingle the letting go with the holding on.

Sometimes it works; it’s right. It’s time. And it’s a joy to watch.

This mom is still learning the balance, but at times, it’s a real pleasure. Such a simple one, you hardly notice it.

And that’s the beauty of it.

Laura,

I feel this right now with my girls, this wanting to hold on yet needing to let go. Sometimes, it just sort of ... happens.

I don't know if I always get it right. But sometimes, there are glimmers -- those a-ha moments when you know that you got it right.

Ouch. This is so true and it's exactly where we're at. With Sweet'ums starting Pre-K for real this year I'm faced with a great deal of letting go and letting her grow. It's not easy.

How do you feel with it now that you've got grown boys and a grandbaby? Is the balance any easier?

It's also called Motherhood.

In this day and age, too many folks are holding on to the wrong things.

As for our children, I like the idea of giving them roots to find their way home but wings to fly on their own!

Have a beautiful day! Tammy

I like what T's Daily Treasures says...i am praying that my oldest, as we bring her to college 4 hours away from us, for the first time, will know that she has wings to fly but that her roots are here.....it's a bittersweet time: letting her go..she's ready, yet wanting to keep holding her hand :)

And the thing is it does not end when they are little. Our youngest just quit his very good job and is going to travel Europe for awhile. Thankfully I can let him go to the Father's hands.

Hi Laura,
Finding the balance between letting go and holding on is a hard thing to do,as you say.Sometimes we do one when we should do the other.

Yes, indeed, it's a very delicate balance. I take ALL comfort in knowing that I can let them go and trust Him not to.

This was a wonderful and very poignant simple pleasure.

I can feel the hurt & the pleasure too. One of mine is been out of the house now for almost two years and now seeing the last one into the high school years. Healthy but hurts!!

Laura, I have that quote sitting on my desk this very moment. It's one of my favorites because it is so very true.

I agree with T's daily treasures ...we are holding on to the wrong things alot of times .If we could just stay focused on what is the right thing to hold on to
