More Than a Book Review: Mother of Pearl

Saturday September 29, 2012

Yes, this is a book review I said I’d write…but it’s much more than that.

When I agreed to read Mother of Pearl by Kellie Coates Gilbert, I thought it sounded interesting. But I had no idea the book would speak to me as it did. Maybe it’s a mom thing, but the author really connected with me…and blessed me.

The back cover copy asks, “How far would you go for your child?” I’m hooked. But then as I get into the story of Barrie Graeber, a high school counselor with a loving husband and two kids, I’m seeing parallels. Barrie and I are different, but she experiences the helplessness we moms know. That sinking feeling when we see one we love taking a path that will hurt and scar.

I took the journey with Barrie, watched her suffer and strive before she finally recognized her need to trust in Someone bigger. My heart journeyed with her mom’s heart. In fact, I read the book in a 24 hour period. I was pulled in by a mom’s emotions while fascinated with the mystery Barrie needed to solve, the answer she needed to find.

When I finished the book, I searched for Kellie Coates Gilbert’s website and wrote her an email that went something like this:

“This book is compelling and so relatable to moms -- especially so for me. We recently received news that someone we love and have shepherded is walking down a path that will only bring hurt. This one is not still a child at home, but Barrie's 'mom thoughts' echoed in my heart as I read. The situation is different, but mom angst and the need to trust the Lord is a distinct parallel. I just wanted you to know that your book resonated deeply with me. I'll be giving it a huge recommendation! Thanks for pursuing the call to write and getting your -- and His -- message out.”

I got a sweet reply from Kellie Coates Gilbert, and now I’m making good on my promise.

Here’s my “huge recommendation.” Don’t miss Mother of Pearl by Kellie Coates Gilbert.

It’s compelling, genuine…and a real blessing.
