Dreams, Vision, and Living in the Moment

Monday January 21, 2012

Ever feel like your vision got derailed? Maybe you felt like God had placed that vision on your heart, and now...

Maybe it's just been pushed to the back of your heart and head by the pressing needs of today.
Kids to raise, a day job to tend to, lack of funds...
Lots of things can sidetrack your vision, and one day, it just looks like an elusive dream.

How can you live in the now -- with all its demands -- and still hang on to your vision?
  • Hold on to your conviction. Which one? The one all the others stem from -- your conviction in God and His word.
Keeping that in focus helps me balance the demands of today with my "vision view." Psalm 19:7 reminds me that His word "revives my soul," is "truthworthy," and "makes wise the simple."

While I wait on the vision and serve Him today, I need reviving, refreshing. And I need wisdom as I look to the future.
  • Show some compassion. Galatians 5:13 tells us, "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."
Reach out with your vision. Volunteer to help someone. Let your talent help your church or a ministry. Don't hoard your gift until your dream scenario shows up. Give it up -- in compassion -- to help someone else.
  • Rest, be quiet, and trust. Isaiah 30:15 says, "This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel says, 'In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.'"
I don't know about you, but I don't want "...but she would have none of it" to be said of me! I want that rest and quietness and trust.

So while I wait for the vision, I rest...in Him.

I quiet my soul...with His word.

And I trust -- not in what I can do to make it happen, but in Him, in His perfect time.

I'm reassured as I read several verses later in Isaiah 30: "The Lord longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion...Blessed are all who wait for Him!"

In Your time, Lord.

I'm linking up with Laura, Michelle, Holly, and Jen today.

I too think the quieting of the soul is a real key in hearing His will and finding His dream. I have been led lately to stillness..

I love all of your points here, Laura Lee, but especially "Show some compassion." That's one we often forget when we are waiting on our dream or we at least "grow weary in doing good." But as you you've pointed out, giving up our gifts is not only what God wants us to do but, I believe, leads to greater blessings from Him when He opens the door to our dreams. Great word of encouragement!

Oh how true the "show some compassion" thing is!! (at least it's been that way in my own life..not that I've got it down perfectly of course....!) I've been meditating on the truths about being in the presence of God...about finding peaceful moments in busy days.....this was a perfect post as I sit before my quiet time.....thank you!

Such good words, Laura. All this dream talk is stirring some deep things in this woman. I don't want to be so focused on the vision that I lose the blessing of now. Meditating on your words today. They are a help.

Laura, seems like I'm hanging on to a vision with all ten toes and fingers while sliding down even more. Maybe I need to rest a bit to clarify. Good words, dear friend. Thanks.

Love this post! Especially the ideas of accepting God-given seasons of rest and of compassionately sharing our gifts instead of hoarding them for our vision. Thanks!

Why do our human minds want to go from A to Q when God has something for us at every step of His plan? Love that you encourage all to love and serve now - our homes, our churches, our communities. If God has placed a bigger vision it will unfold in His time through His progress with and in us. Thanks for the great post!!
